What is partial breast reconstruction?

Partial breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to reshape and restore the breast following a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. It helps preserve breast symmetry and contour, minimising visible deformities after cancer surgery.

Unlike full breast reconstruction, which is performed after a mastectomy, partial reconstruction maintains as much natural breast tissue as possible, using plastic surgery techniques to reshape the remaining tissue or add volume where needed.

Who is partial reconstruction for?

This procedure is suitable for women who have had breast-conserving surgery and want to:

  • Restore breast shape after a lumpectomy
  • Improve symmetry if one breast appears smaller or misshapen
  • Minimise scarring or indentation caused by tumour removal
  • Avoid the need for implants or full breast reconstruction

Partial reconstruction may be performed at the same time as cancer surgery or as a delayed procedure after treatment.

Partial reconstruction techniques

1. Volume displacement techniques

These techniques involve reshaping the remaining breast tissue to fill the space left by tumour removal. They are suitable for women with moderate to larger breast sizes and include:

  • Mammoplasty (therapeutic breast reduction) – a breast reduction and reshaping procedure that removes excess tissue while ensuring a natural appearance

  • Mastopexy (breast lift) – repositions and reshapes the breast while maintaining its volume

2. Volume replacement techniques

If a significant amount of tissue has been removed, volume replacement techniques may be used to restore fullness. These include:

  • Chest wall perforator flaps – using nearby skin and fat from the back or side of the chest to reshape the breast

  • Lipofilling (fat grafting) – transferring fat from another part of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs, to add volume and smooth out irregularities

3. Contralateral breast surgery (symmetry surgery)

In some cases, surgery on the opposite breast may be performed to improve balance and symmetry, especially if a large volume of tissue was removed from the affected breast.

What are the benefits of partial breast reconstruction?

  • Restores natural breast shape and contour
  • Minimises visible scarring or indentation
  • Improves breast symmetry
  • Uses natural tissue where possible, avoiding implants
  • Can be performed at the same time as lumpectomy or as a delayed procedure

Recovery after partial reconstruction

  • Most patients return to normal activities within two to four weeks
  • Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort is normal but improves over time
  • Gentle stretching and physiotherapy exercises may be recommended to improve mobility and prevent stiffness
  • Regular follow-ups with your surgeon ensure proper healing and the best cosmetic outcome
