Breast reduction surgery

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces the size and weight of large, heavy breasts. If you experience physical discomfort or emotional challenges due to large breasts, such as back, neck, and shoulder pain, skin irritation, or difficulty finding suitable clothing, breast reduction could offer significant relief. In many cases, reducing the weight and size of the breasts can improve comfort, physical activity, and self-esteem.

Who can benefit from breast reduction?

If you struggle with chronic pain, limited mobility, or skin irritation under the breast fold due to large breasts, breast reduction may be right for you. This surgery can alleviate physical discomfort and improve your quality of life. It’s also an option if you have asymmetrical breasts or if the size and weight of your breasts restrict your daily activities. Ideal candidates should be in good health, have a stable weight, and realistic expectations for the surgery.

The breast reduction procedure

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and generally takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on your goals and needs. During the surgery, the surgeon will remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to achieve a balanced, proportionate size. The nipple and areola are repositioned for a natural appearance. Techniques vary, and your surgeon will choose the method that best meets your needs:

  • Anchor incision: The most used method, involving three incisions—around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease.
  • Vertical or lollipop incision: Uses two incisions—one around the areola and one vertically down to the breast crease. Suitable for moderate breast sizes.
  • Liposuction-only reduction: For cases with primarily fatty tissue and minimal sagging, liposuction alone may be used to reduce breast size.

Recovery after breast reduction

Recovery varies, but most people take around 1 to 2 weeks off work to rest and heal. You’ll likely experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort for the first few days. A supportive surgical bra can help minimise swelling and aid healing. Light activities can usually be resumed after a few weeks, while it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

You may notice relief from symptoms such as back pain soon after surgery, though it can take a few months for swelling to fully subside and the final breast shape to appear.

Risks and complications

As with any surgery, breast reduction carries some risks, such as infection, bleeding, scarring, and changes in nipple sensation. While most people retain sensation, some may experience temporary or permanent numbness. Scarring is also common, but scars typically fade over time. Choosing a skilled, experienced surgeon helps minimise risks and optimise your results.

Benefits of breast reduction

Many people find breast reduction offers significant relief from both physical and emotional challenges. Benefits include:

  • Reduction in back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Improved posture and physical function
  • Enhanced ability to engage in physical activities
  • Relief from skin irritation and rashes
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem
